The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
