RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
