Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
